Indian-American author, Tejal Toprani Misra, has released a new children's book, "Seeking Sita: The First Diwali," which explores the rich traditions and values of Indian culture through the popular Indian epic Ramayana.
The picture book, published by Archway Publishing, follows the story of protagonist, Sita, as she returns to the Kingdom of Ayodhya after being taken by the evil King Ravana. Her return marks the first celebration of Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.
Throughout the story Sita, the daughter of the earth and the reincarnation of the Goddess Laxmi, is a role model of perseverance, courage and hope, themes that resonate with modern society. “She is a role model of perseverance and resilience; themes that are needed and prevalent in everyday society,” Misra said.
As a therapist, Misra believes that such stories can have a profound impact on young minds. "Through Sita's story, I hope to not only entertain but share life lessons. I want children from all backgrounds to see themselves in Sita, to find their quiet courage and strength,” she said.
The California-based author, who grew up making frequent trips to India with her family, has developed a deep appreciation for her ancestral roots. These experiences have significantly influenced her writing, inspiring her to pass on this cultural heritage to her two sons and the next generation, the publisher said in a statement.
