Assam govt to help locate remains of fallen American WWII soldiers
US Consul General requested the state's CM to help locate the remains of around 1000 American soldiers who are said to have lost their lives in Assam between 1939-1945.
The Consul General of the U.S in Kolkata, Melinda Pavek, requested the Assamese government to aid and assist in locating the remains of American soldiers who died in the northeastern state during World War II. The request was placed before Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during a meeting in Dispur.
Speaking on behalf of the Assamese government, the CM said “will do everything we can” to locate the remains of the fallen soldiers between the period of 1939 to 1945. Reportedly, around 1000 American soldiers lost their lives in Assam during that period.
During the meeting, Sarma also underlined the close ties between India and the U.S. and stressed on Assam’s growing economic potential for American investment. Pavek and Sarma discussed regional connectivity, energy, agriculture, health and climate change.
