Ahead of the G20 Leaders Summit in India, Seattle University will host the Seattle-Setu (Setu is the Sanskrit word for bridge) conference to showcase Seattle’s pivotal role in building economic and political bridges with India. A group of notable individuals from both countries, including lawmakers, US government representatives, and business leaders, will convene to discuss a variety of issues.
On the significance of the conference, Seattle University’s president Eduardo Peñalver said, “As both India and the United States struggle with common challenges – such as climate change and threats to our democratic institutions – there is a great deal that we can learn from one another.” He hoped that this conference would highlight the importance of India to the Washington State.
At the conference, Assistant Secretary for India, U.S. State Department Nancy Izzo Jackson, Seattle City Mayor Bruce Harrell, City of Deputy Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha), Sasmit Patra, Washington State Senator Manka Dhingra, Ankur Vora of Gates Foundation, Meenakshi Rishi of Seattle University and other prominent individuals will participate in a discussion to advance US –India relations.
The RoundGlass India Center at Seattle University, which is envisaged to serve as a bridge between India and the United States, will be officially launched at the conference, as per the released schedule.
Professor of Law and associate dean at Seattle University's School of Law, Sital Kalantry, who will also serve as executive director of the university's new Roundglass India Center, said, "The Roundglass India Center will convene important political, economic, and scholarly dialogue about India in the Pacific Northwest and will strive to promote the rule of law and economic growth in both countries.”.
The Seattle-Setu conference intends to highlight the benefits that Indian companies bring to the Washington state economy as well as the investments that flow from the state to India. Distinguished legal experts from India and the United States will share practical advice on facilitating cross-border business partnerships. According to the university, Seattle has also become a hub for philanthropic activities, and leading social entrepreneurs from the region will discuss the social impact of their initiatives.
